Smiling Tea Kettle

"A cheerful frame of mind that enables a tea kettle to sing though in hot water up to its nose."

Next Book In Series

I started the last book in the paranormal series I've been reading - 'The Finding'. I'm not saying the book is bad but as someone who is trying to learn how to write as well, it is reinforcing several pieces of advice I've been told about for writing.

For example, I feel like this book does something in particular that I tend to do in my own writing...share waaaaaaay more info than the reader needs. If I can go through and read just a line here or there and not feel lost, even to the point of skipping pages...well, then, yeah. That tells you there is a lot of stuff there that doesn't need to be there. I feel bad, because I have done this same thing. :-P And from personal experience I know how hard it is to see that all that other stuff isn't necessary. To the creator, its ALL necessary. So its definitely been a point driven home to me. :-)

One other thing I'd note is the starting point. I've heard so many times...'Start where the change in their lives is taking place.' Not after it. Not three months before. At. Identifying that moment in time isn't always easy. At least not say for the writer who is so close to it all. But as a reader I'm clearly seeing the validity of this 'rule'.  I feel like I'm just now getting to where the book should have started and I'm in Chapter 8. :-(

Format

Well, I started reading two books today and this is mostly because of format. The one book I'm really wanting to read is 'Inheritance' by Christopher Paolini. I loved the other three books in the series and have been impatiently waiting for the last one to be released. :-) The thing is, its HUGE. I mean really, really HUGE! I do not want to lug it around to places like the doctor's office etc. where I did go today and had time to read while waiting.

So then I use my Nook. In that I started reading 'The Keeping' by Nicky Charles. Its a free book, released free by the author. Romantic Paranormal Suspense. I read the first one in the series and enjoyed it overall. It might tend to drag at times but overall I like it.

Joining the fun!

Hey Everyone!

I used to write posts all the time and definitely miss it. I don't know if I'll have time to always post but thought it'd be fun to pick up again and would start with a book post as its the 6th Graders who have re-inspired me to post again. :-)

Final Scream

I picked this book up because of the excerpt. It was excellent. I couldn't wait to read it. I knew by the second chapter though that the book was not my type of story. A bit too crass or something. First I kept putting off reading any more as I was frustrated with it. But I have some other books I really want to dive into and won't let myself start until I had finished this one so then I started skimming until finally I just jumped to the end to see how it ended. I don't normally do that but despite that awesome excerpt, it just wasn't a book for me.

I wouldn't say that the book is not good necessarily, just that it wasn't written in a manner or tone maybe that I enjoy.

On to the next book. :-)

And one last tester to see some more.

Just curious how it will all lay out - what does what.

Testing

Just another tester.
