I started the last book in the paranormal series I've been reading - 'The Finding'. I'm not saying the book is bad but as someone who is trying to learn how to write as well, it is reinforcing several pieces of advice I've been told about for writing.
For example, I feel like this book does something in particular that I tend to do in my own writing...share waaaaaaay more info than the reader needs. If I can go through and read just a line here or there and not feel lost, even to the point of skipping pages...well, then, yeah. That tells you there is a lot of stuff there that doesn't need to be there. I feel bad, because I have done this same thing. :-P And from personal experience I know how hard it is to see that all that other stuff isn't necessary. To the creator, its ALL necessary. So its definitely been a point driven home to me. :-)
One other thing I'd note is the starting point. I've heard so many times...'Start where the change in their lives is taking place.' Not after it. Not three months before. At. Identifying that moment in time isn't always easy. At least not say for the writer who is so close to it all. But as a reader I'm clearly seeing the validity of this 'rule'. I feel like I'm just now getting to where the book should have started and I'm in Chapter 8. :-(
